The artist Anaëlle Vanel presents, the project carried out during her two-month residency at Homesession: Sol in leone, centred on the figure of Gerda Taro. Through her and her photographs, it evokes the Battle of Brunete (July 1937), the places, the traces and the memory of this episode of the Spanish Civil War in which she died.
The set is an edition (100 copies, risograph) consisting of a montage of photographs taken in Brunete and Villanueva de la Cañada (Madrid), Barcelona and Paris, documents and texts.
ANAËLLE VANEL (Mende, France, 1991) Lives and works in Lapeyrouse (FR).
Graduated from Ensba Lyon in 2014, Anaëlle Vanel works mainly with photography and text.
Considered as an act, each photograph is the result of a sedimentation of experiences and stories. The aim is to preserve the initial mystery of the encounter, not to damage the photographed object. It is not the destruction that is emphasised; the object is not exhibited. The text anchors the photograph in the duration of a narrative, in a before and after. History and myth are successive layers of the same palimpsest. There is no series, no centre, no beginning and no end. Each set is fixed at the moment of the exhibition. This is how images become porous, how narrative emerges.
His work has been exhibited in France and abroad in group exhibitions (Villa Medicis, Rome; Centre de la Photographie, Geneva; Kunsthalle der Sparkasse, Leipzig; Galerie Michèle Didier, Paris) and in solo exhibitions Mac, Pérouges, Galeries nomades, IAC Villeurbanne; Museum of Natural History, Florence. His last solo exhibition “Mais, dit-on, il y a des obscurités” took place in 2021 as part of “La fabrique du nous” at the IAC. His works are also present in the collections of the CNAP, the IAC and the Musée du Gévaudan.
