Patrick BÉRUBÉ

Born in 1977
live and work in Montreal, Canada

Patrick Bérubé has a practice primarily in installation and in public intervention. Resorting readily to photography and the video, he uses our daily references to create an worrying and destabilizing dimension. He creates experiences and situations, which leave little choice and possibilities of acting or of reacting; realities more or less controllable, filled with contradictions and contrarieties. Exploiting desire and impotence, he questions our behaviors and our reactions in relation with different threats or prohibitions.

Being as much able to abolish the pleasure than to cause it, he tries to thwart the spectator, to extract a part of anguish or mystery. The idea is to activate a series of specific stimulations and small distresses. This way, he involves the individuals in circular movements, uncertainties; discontinuities, which destabilize and who break the linear and usual conception of world. The space and the place are very important in work, as much in the process of creation that in the work itself. Able to cause paradoxes and to work out ambiguities, integration with the place enables him to cross and exceed the fixed limits. Its works are offered like spaces of resistance and rupture with the standards and conventions, creating sometimes an unexpected dimension.
